PROMOTION AND OUTREACH

May 14, 2011 two groups from Baraton left campus early for the promotion and outreach program. One group led by Dr. Fred Amimo, our newly elected Deputy Vice Chancellor with UEAB Choir went to Sunshine SDA church in Eldoret. Our group with Dr. and Mr. Banaga visited Kaborok High School in Kericho. We left at about 7:00 am and arrived in Kaborok at around 10:00 am.

The Sabbath program which were  coordinated by Kaborok High School was actually a combined church service for the SDA high school students from the surrounding area.   They called it Adventist Youth Rally, a preparation for the grand UEAB - AY rally which is scheduled on May, 2011.

Mr. Elkanah Maina our Student Finance accountant was the main speaker for the Divine worship. After lunch we continued with promotion and guidance counseling program by Dr. Nangoy, Dr. Banaga and Mr. Mayaka.

We finished the program at about 16:00 pm, then we visited the father of Nathan Chepkwony (one of the Outreach member) who was just recovered from a stroke.The family was so kind, generous and we really enjoyed the hot coco-milk with mandazi.

A wonderful week with Dr. Hyveth Williams

The university had a wonderful week of prayer from May 2 to May 7, 2011. The speaker was Dr. Hyveth Williams from Andrews University. She was a former Pastor from Campus Hills Loma-Lima. She delivered some of  her life's experiences that touched many of us. Somehow we personally also feel that she speaks about our own sinful lives, and at the same time opens up our eyes about the wonderful grace offered to us by our Savior, Jesus Christ.
We feel very blessed with this week of spiritual emphasis, it reminds us about the mission God gave us and the protection He grants for those who are faithful.

University of Eastern Africa, Nairobi Campus

University of Eastern Africa, Baraton (UEAB) took a historical milstone on April 17, 2011 by launching the new extension campus in Nairobi.

Early morning at about 4:00 AM we left Baraton to attend the opening ceremony of UEAB Nairobi campus. The program started at around 10:00 AM and finished at around 12:00 noon. After the opening ceremony, I joined the Business School faculty and staff to promote our business programs to the audience who attended the program.

Wazuri Kibera

Wazuri Kibera means good people from Kibera. Despite all negative image portrayed about Kibera, we discovered Kibera was not as bad as what we read or heard from others.We visited Kibera last Saturday April 2, 2011, made new friends, and found out they are good people. We enjoyed the walk along the narrow path among their shacks.

There are approx 2.5 million slum dwellers in about 200 settlements in Nairobi representing 60% of the Nairobi population, occupying just 6% of the land. Kibera houses almost 1 Million of these people. Kibera is the biggest slum in Africa and one of the biggest in the world.

All the people are African. The original settlers were the Nubian people from the Kenyan/Sudanese border – they now occupy about 15% of Kibera, are mostly Muslim and are also mostly shack owners. The other shack owners are mostly Kikuyu (the majority tribe in Nairobi) – although in most cases they do not live there but are absentee landlords. The majority of the tenants are Luo, Luhya and some Kamba – these people are from the west of Kenya. There are many tensions in Kibera, particularly tribal tensions between the Luo & Kikuyu, but also between landlord and tenant and those with and without jobs.(http://kibera.org.uk/Facts.html)

Ibis

There are two types of ibis here in Bara, the white and black ibis. The black ibis is actually very dark flourescence green,which will sparkle beautifully when expose to the sunshine. I took their pictures very early morning while they were still perching on the old dry tree at the Baraton farm.
